Hi.

I'm still here, just in case you're wondering.

But the call of the garden has become even louder. I'm checking on newly planted seeds the way a new mother checks on a sleeping baby. Wake up little seeds.

fresh

The kids are selling minty lime-aid in front of our neighbor's house, and apparently making a lot of money. They've come in several times to fill up their pitchers. I took advantage of the quiet house to clean off my kitchen windowsill. Now I can better enjoy the Anthropologie style egg crate I picked up at Ross for $2.99. Score.

curious chicken

We have two brooding chickens. Aidan placed six fertilized eggs under each of them. He wishes he could sit on a few and hatch them himself. Sometimes I wish he could sit still that long. If all goes well, we'll have baby chicks around Memorial Day. I caught one of the brooding hens taking a break from her nest today. She was all fluffed up and bothered. Do you ever feel that way? I certainly do.

my gloves, his beer

Especially around 5 o'clock. The time of day when I often pop the top off a homebrew. But I'm not drinking this month in a vain attempt to lose a few pounds. According to the scale, my plan is not working. But I'm going to keep trying, because it's not just about my waistline. It's about self control, a much under-rated virtue. I'm also serving at least two vegetables every night with dinner, because it's not just about the the scale. It's about being healthy.

Our honey bees are arriving on Saturday. Bee prepared for close up photos and bad puns.

bumble bee and borage

And because no post on my site is complete without an inappropriate picture (or sentences beginning with "and" and "but"),

behold the busy butterflies. This photo was a complete surprise as I was scrolling through my memory card. Aidan is definitely improving as a photographer. He can be still when he wants to be.

Bye for now.

  1. hmm, that rustic chair. Have another picture of it? Looks like my style :)
It seems like a lot of bloggers (well, the ones I read) are getting bees this year. I hope it is a good year for them. It sort of makes me want bees. That blue flower is possibly borage? Or am I being ignorant? If it is, can't you make a little honey sweetened tea with it, or lemonade? You know, for variety out at the lemonade stand.

Hi Molly! I love seeing peeks of your garden. Your world seems so much farther along into spring down there in CA. We have been talking about bees lately too. And I can relate to the mothering tendencies with planting seeds. I love these little things. I get so excited.

everything here is so far behind schedule - the ground is still way to cold for planting :( I'll enjoy all the peeks into yours that I can.

Love your simple eating plan - why does the rest of the world make it so difficult?

  5. I like your header (I think it is new, but alas my mind is not what it used to be). Fantastic find at Ross. I love its simplicity. Our planting time is coming to an end as we prepare for the hot summers. Enjoy your seedlings and all the promise they hold. Good luck with the healthier you.

  6. Just the other day, I was scrolling around an online shop, and I came across an interesting item. (Warning: do not look beyond the linked page! Because if you look around this website and you're like me, you'll want everything, and it costs ever so much more than Ross. Check it out: http://shopterrain.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ST&Product_Code=KITC-TABL-22-001001&Category_Code=KITC-TABL
I was so disappointed when I saw those were shakers, rather than real eggs, and I thought someone should make a ceramic egg carton. And then I came to your blog and saw yours, procured for just $2.99. You're a wonder.

And I know that fondness for starting sentences with and. And but. But it's especially impossible to write about bees without bad puns. And references to sweetness.

I'm so glad we'll be beekeepers together. Sweet!

  9. Hello Molly! I found your blog a little while ago, after having found you on Flickr (maybe you remember - no worries if you don't) I just wanted to pop by and tell you how much I enjoy - no savour - your posts. Your first pic of the corn made me inhale long and deep before letting the air 'loose' again:) Enjoy this precious time - would love to see the chicks, and hope you have time to show us (how about a no word Wednesday, to save time:))! Best wishes, Una in Norway (I see the photographic gene runs in the family!)

  12. Oh Molly I wish you lived closer. It seems we are so often on the same page of life. I am hoping, hoping, hoping to get bees -- still convincing the hubbie. But we are going to the valley this weekend to go to the bee store ...

And me? I've been spending all my days in the garden. Things are *just* starting to bloom around here. I am impatiently waiting for my flowers to arrive.

    xo.

  13. Lovely post. And I do so love a sentence that begins with 'and' or 'but' - when I did a Plain English course and was given permission to do this, I was thrilled!

  14. I've been patiently for you to come in from the garden! Can't wait to have some tasty vegetables from your garden. Our Farmers Market opened Saturday - Ah, fresh flowers again!

  15. I totally know how that mother hen feels...sometimes you just need a break! Also, I agree about 2 veggies thing. Like Michael Pollan says..."Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants". I love this simplicity.

  16. In my attempt to shed a few pounds and eat a little healthier, I`ve been starting my day with an all fruit smoothie. By late afternoon, I prefer a glass of wine. I just wish I would remember to pick up a bottle of wine. And I am prepared for the bad puns. Bring them on, Molly.

  18. I love all your photos, but I especially love the first two photos in the post...they just speak to me. Wonderful! I am going to look for the ceramic egg carton at Ross. I first saw one of those on Food Network..Giada DeLaurentis always has one on her show and I have admired it for a long time. I really hope I find one there!

  22. thanks for popping in to say "hi". i look forward to your updates.

i'm still hoping to work up a ceramic egg holder inspired by your suggestion a while back. i know you've got a great one now, but maybe you'll need two with all the new chicks. wonder if mine will be ready by the time they start laying? ah, life!

are your buffs the broody ones? that's how it goes in our little flock.

  25. Your photos are gorgeous. Do I say that every time I comment? I think if you serve 2 vegetables every night, you can keep up the 5pm beer habit.

Good luck with your bees, it's our first time too.
