Over the weekend I turned another year older and I did something scary (that is besides aging). Eleanor Roosevelt made me do it. My friend Tara shared a quote from First Lady Roosevelt earlier this summer that has been rolling around my mind ever since : "Do one thing every day that scares you."
So last Saturday I donned neoprene from head to toe and went snorkeling in the ocean. Do you know there are great white sharks in the Pacific Ocean? Do you know that I'm ridiculously scared of sharks? Yes, I'm one of those people who love to watch Shark Week and read books about great whites, and hate the idea of setting foot in their territory. But I did it, and I'm glad I did. It was nothing like I thought it would be, and I wasn't scared at all once I got in. The view under water has changed my view above.
I owe a huge THANK YOU to my brother-in-law Mark for such a wonderful birthday gift.
Now I can't wait to do something else that scares me.
Happy Birthday to YOU!
ReplyDeletewhat a great challenge; you seem to be full of those! how fun for you!
After spending a day at Pt. Reyes, and observing Tomales (where the sharks rule), I'm amazed you would swim in their water! What a brave thing you've become- aging slowly and enjoying life at the same time... STOP getting older, cause it makes me older too!
ReplyDeleteSee you tommorrow as we exchange your innocent child into a raging "tween" at the concert!
Love
Dad

Isn't it crazy how doing that something that scares you makes you feel so alive? It makes you want to scream in terror and scream in excitement at the same time.
ReplyDeleteThat is me on any given mountain peak.. wanting to scream, and wanting to throw my arms out and yell "I did it!"
