Beauty Is Everywhere

beauty is everywhere

Even in a cup of ketchup at In-n-Out.

I'm pretty dang happy today. Can't stop smiling kind of happy.

It's not just yesterday's "historical event" which makes me happy. More important to me than the destination reached yesterday was the journey to get there. The journey of so many people who took a small, simple step towards the world in which they want to live. Yesterday that step was casting a ballot. But what steps can we take next towards the world we envision?

I know not everyone was satisfied with the news last night. Some are downright disappointed, others are ambivalent. Each person has a different vision of an ideal world. While my perfect world might not look much like your perfect world, here's an idea: what if we all keep journeying towards the world we envision and find ourselves in a world even greater than we imagined?

I pray that we are moving beyond the era of apathetic passivism that has plagued us for so long and into a new era of passionate activism. I strongly believe that if each of us does one little thing to make the world a better place, we will make huge strides towards that goal. Many people, doing one little thing, taking one small, simple step at a time, can literally change the world. Pretty damn exciting.

So whether it's doing something nice for someone else, walking instead of driving, spreading the gospel in which you believe, buying an extra can for the food pantry the next time you're at the store, turning an old t-shirt into a couple newborn hats, rescuing an animal from a shelter, raking your neighbor's leaves, donating something you no longer need rather than selling it, calling a friend just because you're thinking of them, reading your child an extra book tonight, letting someone else have the right of way, smiling at a stranger, DO IT NOW. And tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after. YOU can make a difference. I've never considered myself an idealist, but I'm ready to give it a try.

And if you have a minute or three, watch this video. I have one word for Summer Pierre: amen.

  1. What you love has power. I'm typing this and my power walks in and gets on my lap. My power needs a diaper change. This is why my life is a beautiful comedy. Gotta go...
Group hug for the power of our time, and for hope. I've got your back.
