Never Leave Home Without A Tapestry Needle

The last time we went up to the mountains I seriously overestimated my knitting prowess. I thought I'd finish up a pair of socks or two, yet I didn't even come close. Of course I had no idea Avery and I would get sick and that the house we stayed in would have cable TV. Sore throat, headache, a moaning eight year old and an I-Carly marathon are not ideal conditions for knitting.

This past weekend we went up to the mountains again to camp for a night. I packed my knitting bag lightly and added a bottle of ibuprofen just in case. Let me just tell you, the knitting conditions were perfect. The husband and son went fishing, the daughter made friends with girls in a neighboring camp site, and mom sat in a chair by the river and knit, knit, knit.

sock one done!

I finished a sock on day one. Of course I didn't plan on finishing a sock, so I hadn't packed a tapestry needle to graft the toe. I thought I could just hang one more day without knitting, but I couldn't do it. The knitting conditions were too good to pass up.

Where there's a whittler, there's a way

So I whittled two knitting needles to temporarily hold sock #1 so I could start sock #2. This is why every girl, whether 8 or 32, needs a Swiss Army knife. It's a shame they don't make a pocket knife just for knitters, with a tapestry needle instead of a tooth pick.

  1. you're so clever! A swiss army knife is a very good thing. I'm betting next time you bring a tapestry needle. :)

  2. You only forget certain knitting items once, then they are always with you. Very clever idea with the sticks, I can think of a number of things to use (Maciver style) Glad you had a great knitting weekend.

  3. You are a knitting GENIUS!! Wow. (Now, please don't finish those Man Socks in a day or two because that will make me look really BAD. Thanks in advance.)

(Oh and... how come I am now singing a Flight of the Conchords song, eh? Conditions are perfect...)

    ; )

  6. i seriously thought about it, but i just couldn't figure out how to whittle a hole without breaking the little stick. what i should have done was raided my husband's fishing vest - i bet he had something i could have used!

  21. You know, Beth tells everyone that you are the MacGyver of mommies. I guess she was right! Wait until she reads this ;)

And I agree, it's always hard to tell how much free time one will have. I often take a book somewhere and never get a chance to open it and other times I get caught sitting and wishing that I had brought something!! Good lesson for our camping trip this weekend. (not that I'll be knitting!)

  22. Way to whittle McGyver! You are so clever. I am going to live with you when the world goes down because you've got skills.

  23. Ingenious!
While I doo have a pocket knife, it never seems to be in the pocket of what I'm wearing when I need it most.
But, I do keep an extra size #2 double pointed needle in the door pocket of the minivan and an extra tapestry needle in my wallet at all times!
    The knitting weekend sounds idyllic!
