Good Day Sunshine

It seems almost unfair and insensitive to talk about the weather in California when some of my friends are experiencing a new ice age. Temperatures are way below zero across the map, yet we're experiencing some of the best weather ever. Sunny with highs in the mid sixties. Ahhhh.

sand slide

Of course we have to take advantage of this beautiful weather before it goes away to be replaced by (hopefully) rain and snow - also known as spring in these parts. So today we packed our bag with bottles of water, binoculars and a giant magnet and set out for the nearest lake. I heard that the lake was low, but I was shocked to discover that it is hardly a lake at all. The lake better resembles a river.

water's edge

We tossed our bag aside, took off our shoes, rolled up our pants and played at the water's edge. I never imagined a day at the shore in the middle of January. I should have packed a beach blanket, sand toys and sunscreen.

Californians may be worried about running out of water and money, but we three Californians enjoyed one without spending any of the other. To quote Avery, today was "the best day ever". Memories like these will keep us warm come spring.

a treasure

  1. We too live in California - very southern, at that. On Saturday my daughter asked for money to walk to Target with her friend so they could buy new swimsuits! I laughed and thought, "Would my friends in Seattle be shocked by that?!!"

Your day at the lake looks delicious! The BEST days, things and moments are very often free. Glad your family enjoyed some of them!

  4. I have a similar problem with weather. Southern Arizona is almost in the 80s, while my friends in Chicago are in the negatives. It's always nice to get outside during such nice weather (went to the zoo today, even!).

  5. I totally know what you mean, I feel so bad seeing everyone posting about having problems with the snow and frozen water, etc... and here I'm sweating just wearing a light sweater!

  6. Beautiful pics! We built a snowman today. I envy you! We had fun though. The hot apple cider after outdoor play made it worthwhile!

Enjoy tomorrow! We cannot wait! :)

  9. I had to chuckle at your ending, "Memories like these will keep us warm come spring." I am a native Southern Californian, now in Texas. My mother always said Christmas in So. Cal. is nicer than Easter.

Every year Southern Californians bemoan the "June glooms" as though they've never seen them. Never fear, your "winter" will come! (smile)

Thanks for a glimpse of "home"

  10. Sorry to say I enjoy this weather, but I'm the one that waters the winter garden. Sadly, I let a few plants die because they were under cover, who on earth waters plants regularly during the winter?
Molly, just remember to pack cold clothes for the trip to Utah... on the other hand you should pack summer clothes too, just in case!!!

  22. I am also in California, in northern Cal. gold country area, and I have to say I have been loving the weather. Although the spring fever that has sprung up in my junior high students has not been fun.....if it continues it will be a long way to the end of the school year...yikes...
