Summer Was...

summer was...dresses

I have a thing for summer dresses. I think it started years ago when George told me that he had a thing for summer dresses.

Wearing a dress takes the effort out of putting an outfit together.

summer was...dresses

I simply slip one item on and I am ready. Cool and comfortable.

summer was...dresses

Short or long. Light or dark.

summer was...dresses

Sleeves or no sleeves. Tie or no tie.

I often associate events with what I was wearing. My summer dresses hold special memories - weddings, parties, birthdays, family dinners, going out or staying home and doing nothing at all. I've even gone swimming in one of my dresses. I hope that these dresses survive many more summers and capture countless more memories. The new dresses will eventually become vintage, the vintage dresses will become antiques. It won't be much longer before Avery raids my closet and makes memories of her own in my beloved dresses.

Of course the passing of summer doesn't mean I have to put all my dresses away. With the right accessories, some dresses will transition right into fall.

And by accessories I mean Dansko clogs and wool cardigans - the clothing that defines a different season.

  1. Kudos to you and your dresses miss molly! Just lovely.

My sweet hubby would so appreciate my wearing a dress once in a while, sadly, it seems I rarely wear them at all, not even for church.
They just don't seem to work with the way that I live and spend my time...which is 95% of the time crosslegged on the floor, traipsing through the woods or wrestling these young men of mine.
But you have now inspired me to maybe try to make an effort to think "dress" rather than "capri's".

  2. i have no dresses. none.

i think it's due to nursing the kiddos - shirt/skirt worked better.

  9. I really love dresses, but I never wear them. I think it comes from an internal psychosis that I will mysteriously be flipped head over heels at any moment and I don't want to flash my girly bits to the world. It's SO silly. I need to wear summer dresses.

  12. what a good girl you are. like, good in the way the bronte sisters, or beatrix potter, or emily dickinson, or laura ingalls wilder, or any other dress wearing heroine of mine is - and i am not. dress-wearing, that is. clogs and wool sweaters, yes. loving the dresses in a row, yes. beautiful pictures.

  13. I LOVE dresses! I don't have a great collection like yours, but I'm definitely more comfortable in dresses and skirts. Did you make them all? Guess I'll be looking into Danskos clogs for fall.

  14. a question for you-
when you wear dresses, do people ask you "why are you so dressed up?" I get that a lot when I wear dresses or skirts. why can't it just be that you wear what you're comfortable in? just wondering.

  15. I am thinking of a book I loved to read when I was child. . . something like "99 Dresses" about a girl who only owned one dress, but she dreamed she owned many and drew pictures of the dresses she wished she owned. In her mind she owned 99 dresses, all the dresses she drew. It is a beautiful book about dreaming . . . and about dresses.

I love them both so much.

  16. Oh my. I may have to make an effort to find dresses again after seeing this. It's a post-breastfeeding thing, too, I think, and the fact that skirts are much easier to make fit, too. But with the clogs and cardigan? Perfect.
