The Mom is Happy.

Aidan had his first writing class today. Their first project was to draw a picture of their house, exchange their picture with a classmate, and write a short description about the family who lived in the house in the drawing. I nearly cried when Aidan read his description out loud, particularly the sentence, "The mom was happy."

And I am. I just said to George this morning, after he brought me coffee in bed, "I am happy."

It makes me even more happy that my kids notice.

to-do

The kids and I have rediscovered the joy of typing on an old typewriter. There's just something about the heaviness of each click, the rolling of the paper, the adorableness of the font. Avery, little techie that she is, figured out how to advance the ink ribbon, which I thought was long used up. I figured out that a typed daily to-do list is not only fun, but more likely to be accomplished.

In an attempt to create space and reduce clutter, I bought a box of extra large, two gallon Ziploc bags to hold our jigsaw puzzles. We cut the picture of the puzzle from the box and put it in the bag with all the pieces. Our stack of puzzles, which once measured over two feet tall and took up a large portion of an armoire, now takes up about a cubic foot of space in our hallway closet. So much less clutter!

You might notice I've added some clutter to my sidebar. We'll see how long it's there before it makes me anxious and I move it, but how else would you know that I'm now using Pinterest and Twitter? It's like I've joined the twenty first century (says the woman who types her to-do list on an old typewriter). I'm trying not to let either website take up too much space in my life, but rather use them as organizing tools: Pinterest as a place to bookmark recipes and decorating ideas, and Twitter as a place to keep - and broadcast - my dinner journal.

dinner, tweeted

Not that I think you actually care what I eat for dinner every night, but who knows? Maybe you'll find some inspiration. Every evening, while the meat is roasting and the veggies are steaming (or vice versa), I'll post my menu in 140 characters or less. One meat + three veggies = A Paleo/Primal four square meal. Follow me if you'd like. It would certainly make me happy.

  1. Loved this post. So much resonated---we use the ziplock and cut image for our puzzles, love the clang of our typewriter (though our 3 yr old uses it the most!), and I've just begun investigating the Paleo way of eating.

Have you heard of feedly.com? Basically the same as google reader but the magazine-like layout somehow makes catching up on blogs so much easier and enjoyable. I'm glad it's lead me back to yours!

  2. Ahhh that is SO georgoues!!! Arn't kids just amazing!

Oh do be careful - my typewriter was so good - very old and typed old and I loved it. Then something broke and I found a retired repair man. Well he brought it back to my place and was SO proud he cleaned it up and now it looks and types better!!! I had to be nice and thanks him and tell him what a great man he was... SIGH SO I get the kids to type lots now in hope they can age it for me...

  3. coffee in bed? man, I'm jealous! I love the last photo in this post...so homey and warm! You have great light in your kitchen...I wish I did. My kitchen is dark with a small window. By the way, I love your typewriter...I want one myself and have been thinking about one for a while now. I love the sound they make!

  4. I am following you.
I quite enjoy twitter. Way easier to follow others than have everything show up in the inbox.

  6. A happy mamma makes for a happy home. Wonderful post, Molly. Pinterest is fun. I was afraid I would fins it too consuming but I tend to use it as intended -- a virtual pinboard.

  9. such a great post! and i do find what you have for dinner interesting! : ) we spend so much time finding recipes, shopping, cooking, and trying to be healthy etc and to get our loved ones to eat well too. so it's nice to see how someone else approaches it all. thanks Molly.

  10. I love typewriters too! I swear sometimes I feel like Greg Kinnear's character on You've Got Mail! I zeroed in on writing as my preferred profession really young and had visions of myself plugging away noisily at a typewriter in the wee hours of the morning, but then computers became the thing when I was still in high school, so I feel a little robbed, lol.

  11. I like your clutter. I am using Pinterest the same way, replacing my old bookmark bar with pins. It works for me because I am very visual. I love that you are using Twitter to post your menu. I can't figure out what to use Twitter for.

  13. I love this post, for so many reasons. But the title is my fave. I'm so happy you are on Pinterest, can't wait to see your pins. I've been horrible on Twitter though.

  14. I am going to cut up our puzzle boxes today. Such a better use of space. I love puzzles, but hate the storage. Twitter is so good for menus. Love the idea. Oh, and pinterest can truly suck me into its depths. I find it so much easier to find my bookmarks visually though. Out typewriter was one of the best $5 I have spent!
