Has It Really Been 2 Weeks?

It's much harder than I thought it would be to blog away from home.

plum jam

It's much easier than I thought it would be to let time go by. To leave the lens cap on my camera. To spend the afternoon making plum jam. To walk over to the wild fig tree after dinner. To read several books a week. To not know the date. To pay bills with stamps. To crack open cookbooks for recipes. To call friends on the telephone. To not worry about screen time.

I made an extra effort this evening. I got dinner ready, stuffed my laptop in my backpack, rolled up my pant leg, jumped on my bike, and pedaled over to the wi-fi cafe. Not many college kids here tonight. Too bad - they smell better than the homeless man hanging around out front. I made a new header, checked a few emails, and reserved a few books from the library (I really can't read enough right now). My battery is just about out, as is my tolerance for the smell of over-roasted coffee and the sound of The Rolling Stones, and I know my kids are waiting for me to pedal home and read them a few chapters of My Side of the Mountain.

Me? I'm ready to let a few more weeks go by without even knowing it. It's like being on vacation.

  1. Lovely to see you here.

Everything has its time and place. This is your time.

I do wonder what you are reading?
    Fiction? Non Fiction?

  3. Awesome. I love the header. I love your new life! I love that you are reading My Side of the Mountain. We have the second one in the series in line next! And now, I'm going to use your good example and step away from this thing for at least the day... : )

  9. I've read the My Side of the Mountain series to at least 3 of my kids. I really like those books, and the author. That age of books is one of my favorites!
I applaud you for giving up the connection. It is necessary for the hubby's home office, but not the time that we all spend on it. Thinking about a screen diet of my own.

  12. It's hard to imagine doing this longterm ... but maybe the fact that it's hard to imagine it means I need to do it! It's kind of scary how addictive and alluring the screen can be ... Facebook, email and the like ... I think it makes me feel connected to other adults during the day ... but maybe less present for my kids. hm.

Anyway, I'm glad you're still posting now and then, because I miss you!

  13. P.S. Molly, I just read Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos. LOVED it! See if you can get it from the library (where I got it) -- although it's best to read "Love Walked In" first.

  20. Molly,
You are truly inspiring - thanks for sharing this journey through periodic blogging.
the internet, through selling our handmade goods, though has allowed us to work out of our home and homestead... the pros and cons...

  21. Yes! We all need time unplugged!

  22. I am somewhat taking your lead. On our short vacation - no computer. At home now - once a day for a limited time. It can just suck up too much time. I've got lots to do that doesn't need a computer. Thanks for the inspiration!

  23. Good for you! This life slips by fast enough... if I were unplugged right now, I'd be reading a book instead of looking around the blog-net. I was wondering why Ave's last entry on FB was so long ago.

  24. I feel guilty just leaving you a comment that you'll have to take time to read. but you just have to know how much you're loved and admired.

  27. I recently re-discovered your blog through Habit. Life without internet at home is different, but definitely more fulfilling - at least that's what I've found.

Enjoy your time away. I'll check back from time to time ~ perhaps you'll have posted again. Cheers~

  28. amazing picture, and AMAZING post. i've felt the delights of a broken computer or downed internet, but this you are choosing and that must make it all the more sweet.

  29. What a wonderful idea to be "unplugged". I love the calm and peacefulness that comes when I can stay away from the computer for a week. I wish I could stay away longer but online classes and work require me to be "plugged".
