The Seven Year Old Boy

He's quite an interesting character. Quite different from the six year old boy. A little more mature, a little more sure of himself. When offered stickers at the doctor's office last week, he simply said, "No thank you. I don't need any."

We've been playing a lot of Hide and Seek. Every time he finds me or I find him, he hugs me tight, as if he missed me dearly during our brief separation.

We've also been playing a lot of Apples to Apples, and every time he is the judge, he picks his father's card, no matter what. The seven year old boy is fiercely loyal.

He called me from the roof yesterday. On his own cell phone. Yep, the boy has his own cell phone. In fact, he's the only person in our house with a cell phone. He bought the phone with his own money, then earned an extra $20 to add air time.

"Hi mom! I'm on the roof." Words that make a mother's heart quicken, grab the camera, and run outside. Except the seven year old boy disappears when the camera is present.

That is why the mother of the seven year old boy must take pictures while the boy is asleep.

the boy sleeps

Ah, how I love to watch him sleep.

  12. I think your post really captures the in-betweeness that is so true of seven...the sweet baby sleepy face and the cell phone, all in one!

  13. I loved the way Aidan just came up and hugged me this weekend. He sure had fun teasing me, by calling me on my "new" cell phone and hanging up, when I was sitting right next to him! What a sweety.

  19. I just love that he spent his own money on a cell phone and air time. It is so funny that that was what he really wanted and so awesome that you let him buy it and so cool that what he wants to do with it is call you from the roof. Does it take photos? Maybe you can get him to take pictures of himself and send them to you.

  23. I always had to sneak up on my little brother when he was sleeping...because I loved to kiss those sweet cheeks and he hated being kissed. Thanks for the memory and the beautiful portrait (in words and image) of your son.

  25. Just reading this today (so far behind on my blog reading!), and I can relate to what you've written here. I have a 6 year old boy (7 in March) and he breaks my heart daily with his way of looking at me and with his hugs. I love to watch him sleep too.
