Pie Chart

We are very unstructured homeschoolers. We find opportunities to learn seemingly around the clock. Yet still, I get a little anxious about math and writing. I find a certain level of safety and sanity in daily math and writing exercise, and sometimes the kids like to do "homework"; it helps them feel connected to their friends that go to school and have homework everyday.

Avery is plowing through Saxon Math, and Aidan sits down to complete nearly five pages of the Houghton-Mifflin Math in one sitting. Don't think this happens everyday, however. Sometimes our daily math practice happens outside the book and in the kitchen, on the computer, or on the floor with manipulatives like blocks, Legos, geoboards or candy. When Avery tires of these exercises, she has been known to make up her own math assignments. She loves to graph and I find her literal interpretation of the pie chart incredibly adorable, even blog-worthy.

If you would like to help Avery with her pie chart, please leave a comment regarding your favorite type of pie. So far the choices are pumpkin, cherry, pear, apple, blueberry, carrot (cake, not pie - don't ask, it's not my pie chart), and blackberry. We will add your first initial to the appropriate column, and when Avery is done with her assignment we will bake the pie (or cake) that wins. If you live close enough, perhaps we will save you a slice!

  6. Mmmm cherry pie for me!!! My kids like to give themselves workbook work sometimes, and play school. It's so funny. Saxon is very reassuring, in it's daiiliness. It was driving my kids batty though, so we've shelved it for a while. Out of the clear blue my oldest has asked to learn about "times" and that's bled into division. So we've been playing with the unit block, making charts and holding time tests, just for fun. Math as fun, never entered my mind as a kid, so I'm loving that.

    Go cherry!

(Do you teach political science in home schooling? Today's lesson is about electronic voting machines and weilding power).

  16. You see the trouble with those electronic voting machines?! Terrible. We still do paper ballets in my town. I like to think it works better and no one cheats... so here's a hundred little flittering bits of paper with CHERRY! written on them...

  17. Is anonymous's other name George (AKA Daddy?)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Actually, the first three anonymous votes for pumpkin are from Avery! Yes, a seven year old has cracked the system and cast her vote, all on her own.

  19. Well even though it looks like pumpkin has a very early lead and will probably be voted in, I'm going to cast a long shot vote for Aunt Jan's cherry cheesecake pie.

  21. Pumpkin is my favorite. My husband, whose initial is E, prefers pecan, which is funny, because he's from Maine where Pecan trees don't grow ... but pumpkins do .... He doesn't like lobster either ... or blueberries. Hmm? Go figure.

We do a lot of math the way you do. My oldest likes to make up her own math worksheets, and my girls love their math workbooks. Isn't it funny that kids who don't have to do workbooks or worksheets want to do them? I guess that's another "go figure."

  23. i just love hearing about other homeschoolers days--especially when they sound a lot like our own.

I'm on my own here, but I'm casting my vote for apple. can't wait to see the results. if only i could taste them.

  24. I vote for carrot cake even though it doesn't look good for a win.

  25. Blackberry!
    My initial is M.
