Maya

maya

364 days after I was born, in the very same city where I was born, my friend Maya was born. It took us over 30 years to find each other, despite our proximity, but it wasn't long after we met that we discovered our birthplace was only the beginning of our similarities. We both grew up loving stationary and detesting school. We both left school early and married young. Fortunately, we both chose our mates well. We're both autodidacts, over-thinkers, designers, Avalonians at heart, and procrastinators (but that's only because we work best under self imposed pressure). But perhaps our most important similarity was revealed by her answer when I asked her why I found it so difficult to converse with my neighbors at a party, but couldn't stop talking when we got together:

"It's because we're both hermits who would rather be at home with our family than anywhere else."

She understands us so well. And she has the smartest answers to my deepest questions. When I asked her how she felt about photoshopping pictures, she said, "I think it's fun."

And it is. It's not an ethical dilemma, a matter of conscience, it's just fun. Maya is fun. And she loves cross processing.

Today is her birthday. Tomorrow is mine. She gave me the sweetest gift: a post on her website about me and my home and how she sees all of it. In doing so, she answered another of my questions: How do other people see me?

way rite

Maya sees me. Way rite. Happy birthday Maya!

You are better than a camera. Beautiful pictures are formed from your words. Happy Birthday, Molly.

  8. beautiful. i long for a soul sister :( i laughed at the knowing - "we're both hermits who would rather be at home with our family than anywhere else." i just left my neighbor's party 'cuz i had nothing in common with anyone and no idea what to talk about. rather be at home.

  10. Happiest of birthdays, Molly. I wish you the best and have a wee bit of envy for women who can connect as mothers of young children on the Internets. As an old lady, I would have loved to be able to do this. Enjoy, celebrate, be well and know that life is good...you are an inspiration.

  15. what a blessing to have found a true friend.
i'm guessing i'm not the only other homemaking hermit out here who's heart was warmed by maya's quote while drinking my morning coffee.

"It's because we're both hermits who would rather be at home with our family than anywhere else."

Yes, that sums it up perfectly. Happy birthday to you both!

  18. Happy, happy birthday, a few days late. I hope that you had a wonderful day! Maya's post was so sweet. My favourite part is the yogourt in spaghetti sauce jars and spaghetti sauce in yogourt containers. :)

  19. What a beautiful birthday tribute to your bosom friend. I had to laugh at her reason for your question - I'm a hermit too!

  20. I'm so happy you have a friend like that. We're a little hermit-y, too, and I'm always so surprised at how people react when I convey to them that I wanna be home with my family, like, all the time.Off to read her take on you :)
