I just virtually "met" Michele of The Great Read. Have you visited her blog? She groups and shares library suggestions in the most appealing way: a book, movie, music cd, and a cookbook all sharing a common theme. I do believe she loves the library as much as I do! So I asked her to make a little collection in her signature, gold framed style for me:

Molly's Collection for Blog

With the exception of The Dirty Life (which my library did not have), I've checked these items out from my local library. I then bought the Dixie Chicks CD and Around My French Table because the three weeks I had them on loan wasn't enough.

Several of the songs on the album "Fly" make me think of Kristin Kimball in The Dirty Life - particularly "Cowboy Take Me Away". I too want to "touch the earth, wanna hold it in my hands, wanna grow something wild and unruly". The "Girl from Paris" does just that, despite hardships, setbacks, and prejudices. She grows more than food; she makes and nurtures a friendship with an old farmer, who happens to cook traditional French food using recipes passed down from his mother, dishes that are no doubt reminiscent of Dorie Greenspan's moutwatering recipes. And that is how my collection ties together. Thank you Michele for showcasing it so beautifully!

I recently checked out The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate from our library, but by the time we got around to reading it, it was due within a few days. There was no way I could read it out loud in three nights, especially with late night swimming practices. Then a miracle of sorts occurred: I popped into the Goodwill, compelled to peruse their bookshelves. And there on the bottom shelf in the children's book section were three brand new copies of The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate! I bought one for us (and returned the library's copy before I incurred overdue fees) and two for you.

book giveaway!

If you're interested in a copy, leave a comment and I'll randomly select two winners to be announced Friday, July 15th.

We're a third of the way into the book and loving it so far. Calpurnia appeals to the latent naturalist tomboy in me. We could both hunt for bugs all day. Plus there's a fair dose of history and science, so we're all learning something new while reading.

Books and bugs, libraries and thrift stores. Just a few essentials for a beautifully balanced life.

Calpurnia sounds like an interesting book--
I haven't heard of it. That cover looks lovely!! My 9 year old is a voracious reader and has recently discovered the Great Illustrated Classics and we lucked out at a yard sale on Saturday and picked up 10 at a quarter each! She was so happy! She's reading "The Invisible Man" next to me.

And recently read (and loved) "The Dirty Life".

Would love to delve into "Calpurnia Tate". The only thing better than reading is reading together as a family.

  49. Miss you. Will call today to ask how the blackberries are looking. My sis has the last jar left and it's 1/2 gone. I made a small batch of Black Mission Fig jam last night but was unimpressed. Too sweet. Are you interested in beet recipes? Our FB fans here at work suggested some tasty looking recipes recently. I can send to you.

  52. Throw me in the hat! I've been absolutely itching to read Calpurnia Tate, and sad that my girl is too old to be read to, 'cause I know she would have adored it. I have to do a little arm-twisting to read books with girls as main characters to T. Which is really unfair, because when I read to his two older siblings, we went back and forth between boy and girl character books. Boys need to hear stories with strong female characters, obviously. (Although if you have a strong female older sister, you're less inclined to them I imagine.)

  53. awesome! i love that fantastic thrift store success! thanks for sharing!

  54. I would love a copy to read for myself and then to send to my niece who lives in Texas and is a budding naturalist. She collects every bug, shell, and leftover bird egg she can find!

  56. I would love a copy. We are voracious readers, and that has been on my list. Such a cool concept for book, music, movie and food.

  57. I'm commenting now after the win. I'm reading about the adventures of Calpernia from our county library. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I haven't had this good of a summer read in many summers! There are so many bits I like-love. The fact that Darwin was banned at the library -and conversely how the Bible is treated now - really caught my eye. Also the fun description of her efforts at knitting, with Mother sitting by. And getting third at the fair for her tatting! - for reasons I won't disclose here. Just a really terrific coming-of-age story about what it might've been like for a girl at the turn of the last century - without being preachy or heavy handed. Fun!
