Curious About The New Header?

Between the ages of 1 and 3, Aidan had an appointment with the podiatrist every few months. Aidan became attached to Dr. Simmons during this time, and even though Dr. Simmons was a very nice man, he freaked me out with words like "surgery" and "casts".

Aidan's little feet turned inward, but thankfully over time, and with the help of daily stretching and special shoes, his feet corrected themselves. The special shoes, which came to be known in our house as Dr. Simmons' shoes, were ridiculously expensive and had to be replaced every few months as Aidan's feet grew. They were adorable, though. Brown leather high tops with soft brown laces. Hurt like a son-of-a-gun when he kicked us.

During the time we were seeing Dr. Simmons, Aidan also discovered persimmons. My son has always had an interesting palate, and I was delighted though not surprised that he liked persimmons. In Aidan's cute little toddler language, persimmons became known as Dr. Simmons.
dr. simmons, the shoe and the fruit

For the month of November, in honor of Aidan's 7th birthday, my header features Dr. Simmons, the shoe, and Dr. Simmons, the fruit. I wonder what our podiatrist would think, though I'm quite relieved we no longer have to visit him.

  5. You could have told my story. I wore shoes just like those, red ones, as a child for the same problems. My first experience with persimmons was a very unripe one on the tree that grew at the side of the road where we lived in the country. Very sweet story and very autumnish look to your masthead.

  10. Love it!

When my daughter was 3 or 4, we put her hair up in 2 little twisted buns on the top of her head. I called them "buns".

At that same time, I was eating a lot of "bean buns" - asian steamed dumplings with red bean paste in the middle.

My daughter started calling the buns on her head "bean buns", and 5 years later, that's what we still call them in our house.

  11. what a beautiful story. thank you for sharing with us. this is exactly why i feel a blog is the most wonderful vessel. it not only lets us pour out our creativity and record our very own history but, allows us as readers to learn and be inspired from others.

    thanks again.
    delightful blog.

  12. My oldest, now nine, needed surgery to correct his short Achilles tendon (which caused his foot to turn in) when he was five, and I must say that your first paragraph sounded eerily familiar to me! He handled the surgery and loooong recovery amazingly, and keeps up with his buddies quite well today :-)
I'm glad your story has a happy ending too - I am smiling about your son's name for persimmons. So cute!

  13. love the story and the header.

a friends daughter had to wear shoes that they called "A boot in the bar" or something. She would put them on her 1 year old and tie them as tight as possible. somehow she could manage to get out of them...the determination of a child.

  27. Beautiful photo! Love the worn look and scuff marks. Reminders of precious years. One of our daughters had to wear those special shoes with the steel bar in between and it broke our heart to put her to bed like that at night, but thankfully they did their job. Nice story!
