I'm still behind on my feeds from Google Reader, but I did manage to catch up on about thirty posts or so. Only 420 to go! Anyways, Visty's post about her stinky but adorable thrift store chicken got me thinking. A few years ago I read in a design magazine that every home needs a little splash of leopard print. I took this to heart and wallpapered Avery's room in a pale leopard print wallpaper. (She was three at the time and took no note of her wallpaper, but by the time she was six she decided it had to go.)
I no longer decorate with leopard print (though I do have two leopard print sweaters in my closet), but I've come up with my own animal related design tip: every kitchen needs a chicken. Visty has one, my mom has one (a ceramic rooster, whose head she uses to dry her ziploc bags), and here is mine:
Inspired by Lori at Camp Creek who makes ornaments for her boys using their favorite illustrations from children's books, I made this using my favorite illustration from Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing by Judi Barret, illustrated by Ron Barret. This picture absolutely cracks me up. I can't help but smile when I see it. It wasn't until I took a picture of it that I noticed the print on the chicken's pants:
Fried eggs. Could it get any better?

ReplyDeleteOh, I absolutely love that book! We bought it a while ago and my daughter knows it by heart (she is three, and we are from Argentina, so she speaks spanish of course). I love this!
ReplyDeleteI have a serious bird thing, but for a while everyone *thought* I was into roosters because I had 2 chairs in a rooster toile and a papier mache rooster in my kitchen. When I got 35 roosters I started shedding them like last winter's coat on my lab. I put the originator up on your flickr group!

ReplyDeleteOh, that chicken is GREAT! We have a small backyard flock of four who sometimes try to get in the house...but here's one I'd actually welcome in! We do have a real-life Stellar's jay in the house right now. Poor guy (gal? Stella!) has a broken wing but our fingers are crossed~

I have no idea why she gave it to us, but it's adorable and I love it, even though it doesn't work very well. I'll try to find the photo I took of it. And your chicken is absolutely adorable!

ReplyDeleteChickens have a particular resonance for me since my grandfather owned a chicken farm and my mom grew up on it. This city girl spent her summers there, but, alas again, there were no more chickens by the time I got there. But I do think chickens are in my blood. I really need one.
Woo hoo, I have a kitchen chicken. It's wooden and I use it's head and tail to dry ziplock bags! I would love to add this funny chicken to my kitchen. This chicken with it's drawers full of egg!

Just cut in quarters, submerge and dig the delightful little seeds out, remove floaty white stuff, strain and enjoy! And, the seeds can be stored in tupperware in the fridge for up to six months! Amazing fruit.
ah, but jessica - if you give a kid a pomegranate, they can entertain themselves for hours! put them in play clothes, send them out on the porch and enjoy the quiet, knowing your children are busy eating a powerhouse of antioxidants!

I love that chicken! I have several chickens in my kitchen! I had my own flock (of real chickens) when I lived in the country. I can't wait to get back, and have those real chickens again!

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. We have a chicken clock in our kitchen courtesy of my in-laws. We call it our crazy chicken clock. Nothing I would have picked out, but somehow just right. I chuckled at your chicken...I especially like her underwear! My kids begged me to buy some chickens last spring. We bought them when they were just a few days old...4 tiny fluffy bundles. The kids hand raised them...carrying around the tiny chicks like babies. When they got larger the chickens would sit on their shoulders like parrots. It was wonderful...they were laying an egg each every day and were just THE perfect pets...until...our not so perfect pet..( a black lab) beheaded one of them when he was "playing" with it. So unfortunately we had to send our remaining chickens to our friends house for safekeeping. I'll have to start saving for the kids therapy sessions now!!!
