Every Kitchen Needs A Chicken (and a giveaway)

First off let me say - Wow! You really liked the birds, didn't you? Show of hands now, how many of you have started making birds of your own? I do hope you'll share your flock; perhaps we need to start a flickr group.

I'm still behind on my feeds from Google Reader, but I did manage to catch up on about thirty posts or so. Only 420 to go! Anyways, Visty's post about her stinky but adorable thrift store chicken got me thinking. A few years ago I read in a design magazine that every home needs a little splash of leopard print. I took this to heart and wallpapered Avery's room in a pale leopard print wallpaper. (She was three at the time and took no note of her wallpaper, but by the time she was six she decided it had to go.)

I no longer decorate with leopard print (though I do have two leopard print sweaters in my closet), but I've come up with my own animal related design tip: every kitchen needs a chicken. Visty has one, my mom has one (a ceramic rooster, whose head she uses to dry her ziploc bags), and here is mine:

every kitchen needs a chicken

Inspired by Lori at Camp Creek who makes ornaments for her boys using their favorite illustrations from children's books, I made this using my favorite illustration from Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing by Judi Barret, illustrated by Ron Barret. This picture absolutely cracks me up. I can't help but smile when I see it. It wasn't until I took a picture of it that I noticed the print on the chicken's pants:

scrambled egg pants

Fried eggs. Could it get any better?

Well maybe it could get better - for you. How about a little giveaway? Leave a comment and I will draw one name next Thursday (October 30, 2008). The lucky winner will receive a pant wearing chicken plaque of their own (the wooden plaque is about 7 inches square).

If you already have a kitchen dwelling chicken of your own, join my new flickr group: Every Kitchen Needs A Chicken. (Mom, I do hope you'll take a picture of your chicken and email it to me so I can post it on flickr. It's up to you whether the chicken is wearing a plastic bag over it's head or not).

I might disappear for a few days to finish up some projects and spend time with family visiting from out of town. Have a wonderful weekend friends and I'll see you next week.

  1. that is too too funny. I don't think I have a chicken in my kitchen. I have a rooster in my dining room on a vintage tray. Does that count?

I have resisted the birds thus far. Must clear decks of deadline projects first.

  2. Me me me! Pick me!!!

I don't have a chicken... well, not in the kitchen anyhow.

  3. I had a flock of about 15 unstuffed birds on my dining room table before I read your post! Love your way of displaying them.

No chicken in my kitchen yet, but maybe I will get lucky. Yours is hilarious!

  4. O.M.G. I seriously LOVE this! I am cracking up over it! And, I don't have a chicken in my kitchen.... yet!

  9. I can't imagine a more cool chicken except for the one in my freezer.

  10. My kitchen is sadly without a chicken. I feel inspired though now and will keep my eyes open for some lonely chicken to adopt for my counter top.

  11. Ooh! I'd love a teaching tool to show my chickens why they shouldn't wear pants. I think they'd appreciate it! And yes, I think every kitchen needs a chicken in it. I've been looking for a good chicken for a while to adorn my kitchen. So far I've settled for a rooster towel I found.

  12. hilarious! i would love that chicken in my kitchen!!

  13. I love, love, love chickens! What I really want is real chickens of my own. I've yet to convince the hubbie that they are a necessity. But, I'd bet he wouldn't mind your hilarious plaque! It's awesome! :o)

Oh, yes, and I love your birds too. I have a branch they'd be perfect on. Another project to add to the never ending list...

  14. How perfect! I put that book on my Amazon wish list. My kids at the library would LOVE it!

  15. Oh, I absolutely love that book! We bought it a while ago and my daughter knows it by heart (she is three, and we are from Argentina, so she speaks spanish of course). I love this!

  16. I have a serious bird thing, but for a while everyone *thought* I was into roosters because I had 2 chairs in a rooster toile and a papier mache rooster in my kitchen. When I got 35 roosters I started shedding them like last winter's coat on my lab. I put the originator up on your flickr group!

  17. I don't have a ready pun like Soon, then's "cracking up" or Molly's "cool" chicken. All I can offer is this:

My cousin & his partner say everyone needs a "kitchen cock" --they have beautiful big copper rooster sculpture in their kitchen bay window! So you think they'd accept a chicken wearing the pants??

Surprisingly, I don't have any chickens in my kitchen. I have little birds on tops of every tall cabinet and on shelves and pictures of birds and bird nests. . .

I love your sewn birds. . .I'm not good with the machine. But I will give it a try!

  18. That is a hilarious chicken!

  19. Oh, that chicken is GREAT! We have a small backyard flock of four who sometimes try to get in the house...but here's one I'd actually welcome in! We do have a real-life Stellar's jay in the house right now. Poor guy (gal? Stella!) has a broken wing but our fingers are crossed~

  20. I don't have a chicken in my kitchen, but I think you are right - we should all have one.

I would love to win this chicken, but if I don't I will search for another!

I bought it in a fair, and it's not available on bookstores anymore, as far as I know. Do they have it in spanish there?

  22. Ok, this is just silly! The girls at work were equally disturbed and delighted by the chicken with an egg down his pants! Funny! Funny! Where do you think he'll look best in my kitchen?

    ReplyDelete
  23. OH, I love this chicken! (I love that book!

  24. Every kitchen DOES need a chicken! So true! Mine has a chicken timer that my aunt gave me for christmas one year. I have no idea why she gave it to us, but it's adorable and I love it, even though it doesn't work very well. I'll try to find the photo I took of it. And your chicken is absolutely adorable!

  25. wow! i love your blog...found you through mayaluna! will be back for sure (especially with chicken pictures like this...)

  27. L-O-V-E that chicken!! It looks so whimsical! No chickens in my kitchen..

I like the birds, but no time to sew.. maybe for christmas! I can only hope!

  28. Wow. I just popped over from maya*made and I love it. I believe a kitchen should also have a chicken... alas, I have not found the right one. I love yours.

Chickens have a particular resonance for me since my grandfather owned a chicken farm and my mom grew up on it. This city girl spent her summers there, but, alas again, there were no more chickens by the time I got there. But I do think chickens are in my blood. I really need one.

  29. Woo hoo, I have a kitchen chicken. It's wooden and I use it's head and tail to dry ziplock bags! I would love to add this funny chicken to my kitchen. This chicken with it's drawers full of egg!

  30. Oh wow! That was my ALL TIME favorite book as a child. In fact, I still have my yellowed copy from the *ahem* 70's.

  31. Don't forget the two chickens in our kitchen window. They were Grandma Dora's I think!
    See you this afternoon.

  33. oh pick me, pick me!!!! i have no shame. that is so freakin awesome!

  34. I have only a small chicken in my kitchen at the moment, a vintage yellow pie bird/chicken. I almost snorted my coffee when I noticed the egg in the pants! Too funny! I would love to make a home for this plaque in my kitchen!

    ReplyDelete
  35. This made me laugh out loud. I love it! My kitchen is decidedly empty of dressed chickens...

    ReplyDelete
  36. that post had me laughing (or should i say "cracking up")-- between the fried egg pants and the leopard print. now if you could only find a chicken wearing leopard, would that not be too perfect?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think I could put a chicken in every room of my house--I just can't get enough of them! And if we ever get more property, I hope to have some live ones clucking about...

    ReplyDelete
  38. B'GOK! B'GOK! B'GOK!

    ReplyDelete
  39. That chicken is hilarious!! My Aunt had cows in her kitchen for a long time, now it's roosters. Weird how kitchens become the place for all things farm and country forgotten.

**also, I noticed your lovely new blog header and have a suggestion for pomegranates. Peel them in a bowl of water. Just cut in quarters, submerge and dig the delightful little seeds out, remove floaty white stuff, strain and enjoy! And, the seeds can be stored in tupperware in the fridge for up to six months! Amazing fruit.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ah, but jessica - if you give a kid a pomegranate, they can entertain themselves for hours! put them in play clothes, send them out on the porch and enjoy the quiet, knowing your children are busy eating a powerhouse of antioxidants!

  41. I definitely don't have a chicken for my kitchen but would love one.

  43. I love that chicken! I have several chickens in my kitchen! I had my own flock (of real chickens) when I lived in the country. I can't wait to get back, and have those real chickens again!

I agree, every kitchen needs a chicken.

  44. Love it! I have 8 hens in the backyard and a lovely glass speckled hen on the kitchen counter (no roosters please) and would love to add that to my hen collection.

Many chicken things are roosters but the hens rule!

    ReplyDelete
  45. That is a funny picture! I would love to be in your drawing! I don't have any chickens in my kitchen, it could use some!

    ReplyDelete
  46. You're a funny one! Love those fried egg pants. My kitchen has a rooster and I think he's looking for a hen:)

  47. I have many chickens and roosters. I guess I will have to do a blog on them soon. I need a bigger kitchen though so I can get more. None are as awesome as yours however!

  48. I couldn't agree with you more. We have a chicken clock in our kitchen courtesy of my in-laws. We call it our crazy chicken clock. Nothing I would have picked out, but somehow just right. I would LOVE to have that print to accompany our clock. Thanks for the give-away. My fingers are crossed.

  49. I want this more than life itself.

I LOVE that chicken and if I don't win her, I want to buy one from you or get the book and make it--like I have time to be adding another project to my list right now with a baby due in 7 weeks--but that's how in love I am with that crazy chicken.

Awesome, awesome idea. Yes, TWO awesomes.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I chuckled at your chicken...I especially like her underwear! My kids begged me to buy some chickens last spring. We bought them when they were just a few days old...4 tiny fluffy bundles. The kids hand raised them...carrying around the tiny chicks like babies. When they got larger the chickens would sit on their shoulders like parrots. It was wonderful...they were laying an egg each every day and were just THE perfect pets...until...our not so perfect pet..( a black lab) beheaded one of them when he was "playing" with it. So unfortunately we had to send our remaining chickens to our friends house for safekeeping. I'll have to start saving for the kids therapy sessions now!!!
