One Down, One to Go

Do you happen to remember the sock I was knitting last December? The one with the cute stripes? Well I'm proud to report that eight months later it is finally done. The funny thing is it did not take me eight months to knit; in fact, I didn't knit at all during that time. I got stuck at the gusset and put it away.

Last Sunday I found myself with some free time and a desire to knit, so out came the sock and by Wednesday it was done.

one down

I started the sock on double pointed needles, but the needles were rubbing my hand the wrong way so I switched to the magic loop. Oh boy is it magical, and easy and fast. I don't know if I can go back to dpn's or two circular needles now that I've seen the light.

I had a few sleepless nights this past week, which meant a lot of quiet knitting time. I really can't complain about that, even if I have been yawning all day. I did learn, however, that trying to graft a toe at 4 AM is not the best idea. I'll have to keep my shoes on if I'm ever around other knitters. (Sorry, no picture; but trust me, it ain't pretty.)

Because I am somewhat of a perfectionist (despite the imperfect kitchener stitch), I have decided to *try* and match up the pattern in the yarn for my second sock. Rather than rolling up a small ball of yarn between where the first sock ended and the next sock needs to begin, I knit up a baby sock this afternoon.

Toes grafted at 7 PM are much prettier. This baby won't need to keep her shoes on.

While I don't need baby socks, it will be nice to have a pair on hand for a gift. And there is nothing like knitting a baby sock in one day to boost a knitter's confidence. Never mind the sock that took me eight months.

We are off to the mountains this weekend. I have high hopes of whipping up the second sock (maybe socks?) in between long bike rides along the river and a fairly large dose of nothing. I'll be back Wednesday, hopefully with another sock or two.

  2. I made socks out of similar yarn last summer (started one and then finished the next exactly 8 months later as well!!!). I just loved knitting along and ending up with those cool stripes! I love your sock..which inspires me to finish a pair I started a little while ago (ahmmm, maybe a bit more than a little while)

  3. The sock (large) is awesome and (small) is adorable. I'll have to hunt back and see if I can find your post about the colorway. I love self-striping sock yarn! Lovely choice. So, congratulations. No kicking yourself for long knitting vacations. I won't tell you about the many lingering UFOs I have lurking around my house and studio. One done, good job.

  4. Have wonderful trip Molly! I hope you get lots of those quiet moments in between the fun to knit and relax.

I love your sock! I started mine in January or February. It's tough to get past the bumps. I'm not sure if I'll ever finish the 2nd one, or just frog it and make something else instead.

  6. I love the finished sock! I need to use my leftover sock yarn for the little socks, what pattern did you use? I agree with working on something that can be finished quickly, it really makes you feel accomplished. Not like the WIP's that are taking months (working on all the time!)When I was your age I didn't sleep well, I did a lot of reading, wish I'd known how to knit socks then. (now the house could burn down and I wouldn't know it!)I'd love to finish my lace shawl before the weather changes to cold! I did start a pair of socks though, the colors are incredibly vibrant, reminds me of Mexico colors! Maybe that's why I want to go to Mexico so bad, guess I'd better put the socks away! Ok, sorry for writing a book on your blog. Have fun in the mountains. Love ya

  8. There is nothing so good in this world as hand-knitted socks on the feet, I am pretty sure. I am glad you overcame your gusset.
Have much fun in the mountains, I love to knit while I camp. Hours and hours of no distraction, save for marshmallows and beer. I look forward to seeing what else comes off that loop!

  12. The socks are beautiful Molly and I really liked the fact that you linked to the instruction video! I never knew such a sight existed and have book marked it to go back at a later date! I've just begun knitting and have made some dish cloths. My Sister-in-law is an avid knitter and has made socks and many other things. Maybe one day I'll get to that point. Right now, most of my time is spent crocheting as that was what I learned to do many years ago. Thanks for the neat post!
