A Warning To Parents of Computer Literate Children

If your child knows how to turn on your laptop, get to craigslist, click on pets, and find a listing for a white bunny that needs a new home, all before you have had your first cup of coffee, you might find yourself in my current situation.

Last night, around 8 o'clock, at the end of a long country road, we welcomed a new member into our family. Meet Honey Bunny.

Our first family pet. George and I had the family pet discussion back when Avery was still in diapers, when we had to drag ourselves away from the litter of puppies up for adoption in front of the grocery store. Yes, they were incredibly adorable, but we decided that we would wait to adopt a family pet until our children were old enough to ask for a pet. Then we would be the coolest parents ever when we said yes.

let's make a bunny

But even better than being cool parents is seeing our children take care of their new pet. Avery has read three bunny books, cover to cover, and is now an expert on what a bunny eats and what it can't eat, how to hold and pet and groom a bunny. Aidan told me it was like he was the bunny's dad and Avery was the mom. They check on the bunny every few minutes, pick lettuce from the garden to feed the bunny, let the bunny eat raisins out of their hands, draw pictures of and for the bunny, and even fight over who will clean up the shavings she kicks out of her cage. As George said, let's hope this lasts. And more importantly, let's hope Honey Bunny grows to love our family.

If you don't want this to happen to you, I suggest you put a parental block on craigslist.

  1. Oh my! Honey Bunny is awfully cute. We have 2 rescued dogs and 2 rescued cats, so my soft heart has to stay away from the pet section of Craig's List.

Soooo, so sweet. my (8 yr. old) daughter wants a bunny so much, but we have an old crotchety cat who keeps hanging on. Only one pet at a time around here.

  11. Welcome, Honey. Better yet to me is your kids' "take" on their roles as Bunny mom and dad. Wow.
My hot weather bunny recipe growing up: fill a cardboard milk carton almost full with water. Freeze. Take out of form (or Bunny will eat cardboard) and place near Bunny when it is hot. Bunny loves ice.

  14. How sweet! A bunny seems a good way to start. I had the same plan but a great dog just showed up at the farm nine years ago and then a wonderful cat, on our porch, last year.

  16. How cute! As a mommy of 2 guinea pigs, or grandma I guess...the newness of the cleaning thing does wear off. Since I love animals though, I often take them out which encourages the kids to continue to stay involved with their pigs. Have fun! Now my kids want a rabbit! One cage in the house at a time!

  17. Is honey bunny named after the book... oh I guess not, I just pulled it out and it is actually called Honey Rabbit! This was the ONE book August would let me read to her, not a lover of books back in the day.
How sweet that the kids are using our old drawing book... I think it was my dad's, i'm not sure?
But I AM am sure they will see THEIR daddy's scribbles on the pages!
welcome Honey Bunny Dunham; you've got a great mommy and daddy!

  18. So cute, my brother's bunny is complety house trained. It hopes around, sits on the couch, goes potty on paper. I've never seen anything quite like it.

  20. But now you are the coolest parent ever. :) We have two dogs and two cats, so I suppose the pet question will be out when we have kids. Come to think of it, I don't know if we have room for kids...

  22. Hopefully your pet will suffice for our children for the time being, too. Luke loves your "easter bunny." And it's so cute how Avery is the bunny mama. No iceburg lettuce for that bunny!
