Tastes Like More

That is what George says when he likes something. The phrase has caught on, and we have discovered that many foods taste like more. Especially dessert. Every Tuesday night is dollar scoop night at Baskin Robbins. While my kids don't always know what day of the week it is, they know when it is Tuesday. The requests for dollar scoop night start pouring in around 3 o'clock. After having a glass of wine last night with my neighbor while our kids rode bikes, I knew dollar scoop night was not on our evening agenda (I'm a light weight). So I made up for it tonight by making pineapple sorbet.

Pineapples are far from a local fruit, and while I try to make a habit of eating fruits which are in season and grown locally, I make an exception for the occasional tropical fruit. Especially pineapples and mangoes when they are on sale. Here is the recipe I used for our pineapple sorbet:

1 pineapple, beheaded, peeled and cut into chunks

1 tablespoon lemon juice (I would probably use less next time, say the juice of 1/2 lemon)

1/2 cup sugar

Puree all ingredients in a blender of food processor. Transfer mixture to ice cream maker and freeze for 20-25 minutes. If you don't have an ice cream maker, transfer mixture to a glass baking dish and freeze for about 3 to 4 hours, scraping the mixture with a fork every hour or so.

Aidan thought it tasted like more. At just over $2 for the pineapple, it was a bargain, even compared to dollar scoop night; less sugar and fat too. I think next time we make it I will add some coconut and maybe a tablespoon or two of rum. Make it more like a pina colada, then it will really taste like more.

  2. mmmm Pina Colda, you always have great ideas. We missed dollar scoop night last night as well, a glass of wine too much for driving and to much work to get bundled up for the walk. Gotta take advantage before dollar night is over.
PS where do you get pinapple for 2 bucks? It is so expensive here sometimes $9.00

  3. Yummm! And the recipe, too! If I can find a pineapple today I'm going to do this. Thank you! Oh, the mention of Baskin-Robbins brought back GREAT memories. Are they still painted really pink inside?

  5. That looks delicious! Sorbet brings back childhood memories - my little brother was allergic to dairy, so my grandmother used to make sorbet for him. Hmm, considering my own little guy is also allergic to dairy, I should get busy making some for us!!

  6. Adding coconut and rum to that concoction would make it sinful! I love it!

Now I've got to dig out my ice cream maker somewhere in the garage.

  7. My favorite part is the "beheading." I can't wait to make something with pineapple now so I can behead it.
